He has a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Immunology from Emory University and did his post-doctoral work in Biochemistry and Epigenetics with Dr. Alan Wolffe at the NIH where he made the connection between DNA methylation and methyl-DNA binding proteins with chromatin modifications and remodelling.

His lab has been focused on FSHD since 2003, investigating epigenetic mechanisms regulating the regions, creating animal models of FSHD, inventing new diagnostics for FSHD, and developing novel FSHD therapeutic approaches, resulting in four FSHD-focused patent applications.

He has been a member of the Skeletal Muscle and Exercise Physiology Study Section, Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health, USA, since 2016 and served as chair from 2019 to 2021, in addition to serving on numerous international grant review panels, and has served as a referee for more than 50 scientific journals.
